The Romance of a Chair maker

Posted By on January 17, 2012

For those hobbyist wood workers who sense a certain Romance to becoming a full time wood worker. I say don’t quit your day job to soon. I can assure you chair making is a lot of hard work. After you cut and split your log the fun really begins. Now you need to make all the parts needed for your arms bows crests and spindles not to mention legs stretchers and arm stumps. This involves several hours of standing at the lathe and sitting at the shaving horse.  I can tell you after several thousand carved spindles the Romance is gone.

For me its not about the finished product its about the process involved in making what ever project I happen to be working on at the time. The process that gets me to the end is what moves me and thus no Romance but, I like to think of it as a passion. So if you feel you have the passion for what lay ahead then I say go for it.    IMG_2364
